Section 377A

The Parliament held debate on the law against gay sex today. There had been uproars since reforms to the Penal Code Section377A were mooted, regarding laws against gay sex. i felt that Singaporean had really took this issue seriously, this applies to both supporters and opponents of Section 377A. it had somehow led to much unhappiness in the society.

Firstly, there were insulting and threatening emails. One our member of parliament had his sexuality questioned. This is quite saddening as it is not only insulting to the member of parliament himself but it also shows the immaturity our our society.

next, an example which i read from an article from channelnewsasia, an Assistant Professor Yvonne Lee had commented sometimes ago that it was wrong to decriminalise homosexual acts. For a month after, people, including young lawyers and students, wrote to the dean criticising her. following that, her photos and phone number began circulating in the internet, She also received emails and “80 per cent of them abusive”, many of which asking if she would discriminate homosexual students.

What an ugly turn of events happening in the law making scope in Singapore. Is our society still too conservative? Well, its still good that people are voicing out more now compared to sometime ago where Singaporeans just do what they are only suppose to as the rest will take care of itself. Oh. or rather the goverment will take care of the rest for you.
