National Library appeals to Singaporeans to donate heritage items

In an event started by the National Library of Singapore, the public are called upon to donate their photographs, postcards, pictures and other items to capture the memories of Singapore before 1970.

Speaking at the opening of the National Library Literary Heritage Showcase, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan called on Singaporeans to develop a sense of history and appreciation of their heritage.

The showcase, which includes a series of exhibitions that outline Singapore’s rich history including pioneer artists and Chinese clans, also features the second run of the Heritage Road Show. Digital images can also be donated through www.deposit.nl.sg
The availability of this deposit website means that local publishers can submit their published works digitally. The National Library Board will be sending out details to publishers to access the website within the next two months.

I feel that it is very important for singaporean to know their culture and heritage. By organising events like this, not only will our valuable history be preserved,it also helps Singaporeans to develop a sense of belonging for the nation in the process. At the same time, the public will also be educated about the pass, about the fore-fathers as well as withness how Singapore has transformed to what she is now..

Through this article, we can see how media is being used as a medium to reach out to the mass in Singapore to call out for donations to preserve our heritage. The pen is more powerful than the sword.
